when the sun sneaks a peek…

after days and days of rain, it sure seems to magnify the brightness of God’s beautiful colors! On two occasions I caught the sun as it was just beginning to peer through the thunderous clouds – which have lingered for what seems like the whole summer and beginning of fall! :-)

But I was glad to [...]

ain’t it a beauty?

We were beginning to think the proverbial pot would never boil, but all yolking aside…we finally have our first egg! :-)

Bryan thought the hens were beginning to “nest” more in the hen-house lately. So we were all anxious to find that first one!
Jadon still thought we should get our eggs from Wal-Mart though. Despite our [...]

our peeps arrived…

and all twenty survived. Yay! There are some Banties, Brown Leghorns, Anconas and Barred Rocks.
As you can see, they were all passed out asleep when they arrived.

If playing mother hen comes easy for anyone, it will be Abby. She jumped right in there and started taking care of them immediately.

Danielle’s method of petting them is [...]

i suppose finding a snake skin…

is definitely better than finding the actual snake – a live one anyway. Of course it does mean that he’s still out there.

When stretched all the way out this guy is a couple of inches taller than me!

we prefer the functionality of our wellies…

…over fashion any day.

not a single one flew the coop…

…or sadly enough even had a chance to hatch. :( The eggs were there one day, gone the next. According to what I read it could have been a crow, blue jay, chipmunk, weasel, squirrel, skunk, raccoon, snake, small rodent, cat, or bird of prey.

Ummm, seeing as how this nest is right outside my bedroom [...]

we’ve got babies on the way…

…baby birds that is.
The awning outside our bedroom window has become the nesting place for a pair of Eastern Phoebes. If you look close, you can see a lot of horse hair they used on the inside of the nest. According to what I’ve read, it only takes a couple of weeks for the eggs [...]

you get a line, i’ll get a pole honey…

You get a line, I’ll get a pole Babe.
You get a line, I’ll get a pole,
We’ll go fishing in a crawdad hole,
Honey, Baby mine.

This crawdad hole was one of the many interesting things I found on my walk yesterday. I think the mini flower bed really makes it! I would love to actually see him [...]

flying kites at pinnacle mountain…

…was a nice break from the usual routine. The park hosted an event for home schoolers to fly kites last month. Our group was quite small and the wind wasn’t totally cooperating, but we had lots of fun trying – especially when we did get those kites up in the air. On top of that, [...]

my ten free trees…

…weren’t really free anymore once this happened.
That “free” quickly turned into $250.00 after I put the wheel barrow RIGHT-SIDE-UP in the bed of the truck. Oh, everything was fine until I slowed down to pull in the driveway! ;-) Nice. Nothing like an expensive careless mistake to set the mood for a peaceful, relaxing day [...]
